Community Conversations with The Corner
Episode 1: Community
We will begin our collaborative Corner - City SPIRIT L/A series with stories that explore the concept of COMMUNITY. This event will feature 5 minute recorded stories, break out session dialogue, and opportunities for Q & A.
In exploring stories connected to COMMUNITY, we invite a wide range of connections to this broad concept. What does community mean to you, and what’s an instance in your life that demonstrates that meaning? How has community influenced your identities and/or behaviors--for better or worse? How have you experienced the malleability of community? How have your communities changed? How have you witnessed communities changing around you? How have those changes been received?
Can you remember a time in your life when a community made you feel like you belonged, and if so, how? How has community led to feelings of alienation or disconnect? Have you ever left a community, or considered leaving a community that has mattered to you? What made you decide one way or the other, and what have been the consequences of your decision?
Come listen. Come tell.

Community Conversations with The Corner
Episode 2: You Can't Get There From Here (Access)
Access is about many things, including how we navigate and take advantage of social systems and structures to help us meet the physical, social, economic, spiritual, and psychological needs we all have as humans. Because our needs are varied, the level of access we each have in meeting our needs is also varied. Access possibilities and barriers look different across communities, regions, and national contexts. Barriers to access are often intertwined with the realities of systemic oppression. Addressing accessibility is often closely aligned with movements for equity and social justice. We are excited to explore the range of access points to this theme and look forward to sharing, listening, and learning from stories that reflect that range.
Here are some questions to jog your thoughts:
When have you been able to make it to the places you need or want to get to? What got in your way? When you think of the phrase, "you can't get there from here," what does "here" mean to you? What does "there" look like? What’s the distance between them? Have you ever found that indeed you can't get there, and what was it like to find that out?
Where has access shown up in your identities and life experiences? Can you recount a time when you first became aware of issues of access? What barriers have you had to navigate or work around to gain access? How have you overcome a situation in which you experienced limited access, and what did that feel like? In what ways have systems lifted you up and/or held you back? Have you lived in different contexts in which access looked different? Are there forms of access you have had to fight for? Have you had an experience that highlighted your degree of access?
